Remember when the Grand Old Party impeached a president for lying about having sex with an intern? The Moral Majority was outraged.
Now, it makes news that Sen. Mitt Romney has drawn the line and will not support a man who has been found guilty of sexual assault.
Others in the party call it a witch hunt, despite the predator’s own words saying that he could grab women wherever he wanted. He brags that he was allowed in the dressing room with naked teenage beauty contestants. His own words, folks!
Remember when Nixon resigned with pressure from his party for lying about the break-in at the Watergate? Now, a candidate can tell his followers to break up proceedings in Congress, to fight like hell to stop the vote count. They did, and people died.
Some who followed his orders have gone to jail for their roles in the insurrection, but the man who egged them on, the man who gave the orders, is skating to an easy primary victory. His party is still following his orders.
He threatens to pull us out of NATO – you know, the allies who came to our defense after 9/11. He tells Putin to do whatever the hell he wants, including roll over our allies.
Are Republicans listening? Are they paying attention to the implications? Do they still believe that God sent this man to shake up the world order? Exactly what kind of world order will we be left with when the U.S. stands alone, subject to Putin’s whims?
Remember who pulled us out of the nuclear agreement with Iran. Now, we are dealing with that front, and American soldiers have died. Do you trust this man to make foreign policy decisions?
Surely, we haven’t all lost our minds. I hope enough of us believe in democracy, whatever our party affiliation, to find our way back to solid ground.
