Is This Okay?

When I hear about immigrants showing up to their legally scheduled appointments only to be taken into custody and deported, I have to ask the president’s supporters if they think this is okay. If so, is there no difference between legal and illegal?

When cancer and Alzheimer’s research is stopped in the middle of trials, does this make sense to anyone? If so, can someone explain it to me without relying on conspiracy theories?

If you have concerns about vaccines, ask how many children died each year of preventable diseases before vaccines became available. Are you okay that children are again dying of preventable diseases?

Climate change deniers, how do you explain sea level rise and melting ice caps? Do you know how many island countries are becoming uninhabitable? Can you name one of them?

According to NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, 2024 had the warmest average global temperature on record since the 1880s, breaking the previous record set in 2023. What is causing these records if not human activity?

It’s storm season in the South. Is anyone okay with the layoffs at the National Weather Service?

We pay taxes in exchange for services. What services do you want to see cut? Do you earn enough to benefit from lower taxes? If so, are you okay with people losing essential services so you can have your cut?

Do you believe that we are better off if every child gets a quality education? Does that include kids with disabilities? If not, why not?

What about hungry kids? Shouldn’t free healthy meals be part of every child’s education? Are we so cheap that we can’t feed the children, especially when we know that children with full bellies are better able to learn? Some school districts are doing the right thing, but shouldn’t school lunches be universal? Imagine the free-and-reduced-lunch kids not being stigmatized?

Are you okay with a mother dying in childbirth or losing her ability to have another child because a physician is afraid to risk his or her license to give her the lifesaving care she needs? Ask your governor if he’s okay with making childbirth more dangerous?

Do you believe history repeats itself? If we abandon Ukraine, are you going to be okay if Putin decides that Poland is next?

Do you believe in the rule of law? If so, whose law, and does it apply to everyone? Are you okay living in a country where you have only the rights that one man says you can have?

If the answer to that is no, start asking more questions. Here’s one: If immigrants are losing the right to due process, who’s next?
