Tweedle Dumb And Tweedle Dumber
Former President Donald Trump and Alabama Gen. Tommy Tuberville want to play general. Lloyd Austin, current Secretary of Defense, was one.
Urban combat commander, distinguished, unblemished military record-holder and veteran of multiple commands in the world's hottest spots, including the Middle East. Think about those real-world experiences and first-hand responsibilities where mistakes mean more people die unnecessarily.
Trump often said he was smarter than all the generals combined. Obviously, he never met Lloyd Austin and we know, from years of close observation, that the nearest DJT came to wearing a uniform of this country was in the days leading up to determining his draft status during the Vietnam War.
Thanks to a friendly family doctor who found that young, athletic Trump had such problems due to bone spurs in his feet that he received a medical deferment from serving.
‘Nuff said about that sunshine warrior.
As for empty-headed Tuberville – mostly remembered as a failed college football coach, primarily at Auburn – he, too, never put on a military uniform, but he certainly has worked very hard at besmirching the careers of hundreds of senior military officers who gladly did.
Over a completely unrelated issue, Birdbrain Tommy held up for nearly a year the earned promotions of general officers, including the top four-star leadership of 11 of our most valuable, courageous and experienced leaders. Time after time too many of his caucus partners voted not to break the stalemate in the Senate, where a single senator can stop a bill, a nomination, a promotion or even an appropriation for whatever reason, excuse or snit that individual proffers.
Civilian control of our military is an important part of democracy and for the most part it has served this country well.
President Abraham Lincoln, for example, proved to be more deft in deploying The Army of the Potomac than several of his generals, especially in 1861 and ‘62. He once told Gen. George B. McClellan he would like to borrow the army if he, McClellan, wasn't going to use it. Borrow it he did.
God help us if Trump ever did such a thing. So far, he's only used a bunch of nitwit lawyers to carry his water in trying to overturn the vote of 2020 but has warned he would be a dictator for a day if re-elected in 2024.
You might want to give that a bit of thought before casting your vote next November.
