What Trump Deserves
Special message to die-hard Trump supporters: Before you castigate me for saying “I told you so,” please read the entire 45-page document containing four new felony indictments against the former president.
If after reading it, you still stand by your man and think there is some big FBI weaponization of the federal government against Trump and he is merely a victim, a martyr, a target of woke activism or some other delusional excuse for his attempt to overthrow our government, then there is nothing in this column I could write that would remotely persuade you.
And I find that sad, especially among a number of military veterans I served with over my own 32 years in uniform. They generally are Republicans, which doesn't matter a whit to me, but secondly, they like Trump's alleged toughness, his put-down attitude toward people he can push around or bully because that's being a man's man.
Nope, I'm sorry, but that's not a man's man in my world. That behavior is most reminiscent of an oversized schoolyard punk, which Trump has been all of his life.
He is not a patriot. Far from it. He did everything he could to avoid military service because in reality Donald Trump is afraid all day, everyday. He lives in fear that people will finally figure his gig out, which is simple: He is so insecure, so in need of always being the center of attention he will do anything to get it, including putting his own needs and wants above those of the country he swore an oath to defend and protect.
Now, I'm going to tell you what Trump will do before he even goes to trial: He will do what he always has done which is to put himself first; therefore, he will try to cut a plea deal, promise to withdraw from the race for presidency if he is not sent to prison.
I hope the judge will not agree to such a Faustian bargain; rather, Trump should be required to stand trial where he will surely be convicted and then serve a common-sense prison sentence based on the facts that he is a first time felon, that his age and his life expectancy should be taken into account; under the best of circumstances he has probably no more than another five to 10 years.
It's only fair since he's taken so much time off the life expectancy of so many others.
